If you’ve driven through downtown Augusta lately, you’ve likely seen the massive structural steel framing rising from the site of the old James Brown Arena. After decades of hosting unforgettable concerts, graduations, and sporting events, Augusta’s signature entertainment hub is undergoing a massive, $250 million transformation.

Owned and operated by the Augusta-Richmond County Coliseum Authority—which is governed by a six-member Board appointed by Augusta Commissioners and a Chairperson appointed by the State Legislature—the new Augusta Entertainment Complex will be managed by Oak View Group as part of a massive transformation to elevate the city into a premier Southeast entertainment destination.

Bigger crowds and top-tier acts are bringing even more excitement this year

The primary driver behind this project is sheer scale. The old arena maxed out at roughly 7,000 seats, which frequently meant major touring artists and massive family shows skipped Augusta for larger venues in Atlanta or Columbia.

The new arena solves that problem with a 10,500-seat capacity. Complete with cutting-edge acoustics, 12 luxury suites, loge boxes, a club-level experience, and premium backstage facilities for artists and crews, Augusta is finally building a stage capable of pulling in the nation's biggest tours.

The Return of Pro Hockey: The Augusta Lynx Are Back!

In a massive win for local sports fans, professional hockey is officially returning to the CSRA. The ECHL announced that the newly revived Augusta Lynx will take the ice as the anchor tenant of the new arena starting in the 2027–2028 season. The multi-purpose arena will feature a specialized 8,720-seat layout tailored specifically for high-energy hockey game nights.

Two Iconic Venues, One Entertainment District

This project is about completely reshaping downtown into a vibrant, walkable destination.

• The Great Hall Connection: The new building will seamlessly link to the adjacent, historic Bell Auditorium. A massive, shared interior concourse will connect both venues operationally, allowing them to share amenities like a box office and culinary kitchens while hosting separate or unified events.

• Public Plazas & Greenspace: Outside the structure, an expansive promenade and public greenspace will provide room for pre-show gatherings, local pop-ups, and community festivals.

• Local Economic Spark: The walkable, integrated layout is strategically designed to pump foot traffic directly into downtown restaurants, bars, and hotels.

Progress Update & Timeline

The funding for this landmark project is completely secured thanks to Richmond County voters approving the dedicated half-cent Coliseum sales tax (C-SPLOST). Because it is funded by a sales tax rather than property taxes, out-of-town visitors help fund the venue every time they shop or dine in Augusta.

Following the official groundbreaking, construction crews successfully cleared the old structure, completed the massive foundation work, and poured the concrete decks for the main concourse and suite levels. Structural steel erection and upper concourse decks are driving the building skyward. The state-of-the-art complex is on track to officially open its doors by late 2027.
