If you’ve driven through downtown Augusta lately, the hum of heavy machinery and the sea of high-visibility vests are hard to miss. As of May 2026, the Broad Street Improvement Project has officially shifted into high gear.

Following a major "acceleration" change order approved by the City Commission earlier this spring, the city has flooded the downtown corridor with additional crews and resources. The goal? To knock out the most disruptive "heavy machinery" work by the end of this year.

Why the Sudden Surge?

For months, the CSRA has watched the slow evolution of our historic thoroughfare. But after hearing from frustrated local business owners and residents, the Augusta Engineering Department implemented a "New Pace of Progress" strategy.

By overlapping work phases and doubling the manpower on the ground, the city is aggressively targeting the 5th to 13th Street segments. This isn't just about finishing faster; it’s about shortening the window of time that businesses have to deal with restricted parking and dust.

The May 2026 Active Zones

The project is currently moving segment-by-segment. If you’re heading downtown this month, here is where the bulk of that increased manpower is concentrated:

• 13th to 12th Streets: Currently in the final stretch of major surface work, with a target wrap-up of July 1.

• 12th to 11th Streets: This segment just entered active heavy construction on May 6.

• 11th to 10th Streets: Mobilization began on May 27, marking the newest active work site in the corridor.

Beyond the Barricades: What’s Coming?

The "mess" is temporary, but the results are designed to be permanent upgrades to Augusta’s quality of life. The revitalization includes:

• James Brown Linear Park: A high-tech tribute featuring a resin canopy and rhythmic lighting.

• Safety First: New raised bike lanes and ADA-compliant sidewalks.

Supporting Local: "Open for Business"

The city is emphasizing that Downtown Augusta is open. While the medians are being transformed, sidewalk access to your favorite shops and restaurants remains a priority. To help ease the transition, the Commission is also developing new parking-management plans to ensure visitors can still find a spot within walking distance of the Broad Street fun.

Pro Tip: Use the parking lots at 116 James Brown Blvd or 865 Reynolds St to avoid the most active construction zones while still being steps away from the action.
