NICK HAS GRADUATED!!! We are so proud of Nick and his family! He worked very hard during the past 5 months and has a bright future ahead of him as a result. It was an honor and a privledge to be a part of his training and the program at Fort Gordon. Unfortunately, while I did get to attend the awards ceremony Saturday morning, I wasn't able to attend the Graduation later in the afternoon due to a conflict. However, I was nearly moved to tears during the awards ceremony at the Bell Auditorium where I saw Nick and so many other Cadets march across the stage. One of the coolest parts of the ceremony was the entrance of the Cadets into the Auditorium when they marched to an Enya song "Only Time" I must say I was surprised to hear the song with such a haunting melody at a military related function. It was a somber occasion and I know I wasn't the only one who felt the sense of pride that filled the room Good Luck, Nick...and you know we'll be talking again soon. This is just the beginning!

Youth Challenge at Fort Gordon

I'm now a Mentor for Youth ChalleNGe Academy at Fort Gordon. It's a program designed for "at risk" youth to give them training that will help them lead successful lives. They go through a boot camp and are taught discipline. They can get their GED and participate in a variety of other extra curricular activities.....they even have a drama club! The duration of the program is relatively short....less than 6 months. As far as the Mentor goes, we meet with them twice a month for 4 hours (we can take them off base) and provide moral support. They have no other contact with the outside world other than weekly calls to parents so they are very excited when their mentor picks them up! They do get a Thanksgiving and Christmas break. When I pick up my Cadet he is sure to gorge himself at some point in the 4 hour period as they don't allow any "bad food" on base and its considered contraband. If a cadet were caught with a snicker bar hidden in the barracks he/she would be diciplined! When we go out he is required to be in uniform but doesn't seem to mind too much. To be accepted in the program the youth has to apply and have the support of his guardians. To become a mentor I was asked by his parents and then I had to have a background check. They called my peers and co-workers and asked them questions like "is he mentally stable.......on drugs"........that sort of thing. Maybe not good questions to be asking those who know me best!! Anyway....somehow I was cleared :) I'm proud to be making a difference by volunteering and investing in this young man's life. He is learning all about CSRA Real Estate, budgeting, God, and other things that I like to talk about. I'm learning about Eminem for example!

Should I Buy a Home Now?

I'm often asked if this is a good time to buy a home. Some clients are concerned that home prices may fall further than they have already. They are assuming that the best course of action is to wait for the bottom in the market and then buy. The problem with this approach is that you don't know where the bottom is until you see it in the rear view mirror, meaning until you've missed it!

Home prices are one factor in determining your cost of ownership, but so are interest rates and financing availability. Even though interest rates have gone up in the last six months, they are still near historic lows. Since your monthly mortgage payment is a combination of paying down your principal and paying the interest owed, if home prices come down a little further but interest rates go up, it could cost you even more to service a mortgage on an identical home!

While a home is a major investment, it is also the center of your personal life. It's important to live in a home that reflects your taste and values, yet is within your financial "comfort zone." To that end, it may be more important to lock in today's relatively low interest rates and low home prices, rather than to hope for a further break in prices in the future.
